Cozumel’s new mayor begins municipal projects, including a new Tourist Security department

On April 8, 2008, Cozumel welcomed a new municipal mayor, Juan Carlos Gonzalez Hernandez. Municipal president Juan Carlos, representative of the political party PRI, will remain in office from 2008-2011. With only a few months in office, Juan Carlos has already begun many projects for the beautification of the island, repaving local streets and highways, improvements of sports facilities and schools, and hurricane preparedness. Most importantly, the local government has begun a new program focused on tourist safety. These new officers are all English speaking and wear uniforms marked Tourism Security. They roam the streets of Cozumel day and night, prepared to assist anyone who may be in need, whether it’s simple directions, lifesaving or rescue in the ocean, or any other problem one might face while visiting our beautiful island.
